A debt is essentially a ‘matter of the heart’ that concerns the recipient rather than the giver.

Three months ago, I met Professor Nur Yalman, an eminent Turkish cultural anthropologist currently teaching at Harvard University. He reminded me of several parallels between our homelands. First, there is evidence dating far back into prehistory that points to similar racial origins for Japanese and Turks in Central Asia. Also, our countries were situated at either extremity of the Silk Road, which was for centuries a medium of cultural and commercial exchange between different peoples. Perhaps for this reason, there are some unexpected similarities in the languages, customs, and traditions of Turkey and Japan even today.

Their purpose is to call attention to the necessity for all peoples to pool their wisdom in the search for solutions to the global problems that confront us.
